Yea Itburnsus

Its called a Compass Rock, you stand at the direction it is pointing and take your compass bearing.
It figured this out all ready, I just gave you the name for it is all..This will point if you can track
the trail to an Alpha..might be some additonal trail marker monuments along the way

Hmmm... Seems I can't access these pics on this topic anymore... I believe this is an important monument to be shared and seen by anyone who wants to see that these supported compass stones/trail markers DO infact exist, are infact close to modern roads and trails, and do point to places of interest further along the trail... (This one, in fact, points toward the Mummy sculpture I've posted in the past, about a mile north from this trail marker...) I'm going to re-send a couple of...

I believe the rock points towards a spur of the Spanish trail that once went through this area. it is located upon a hillside overlooking the river below, and points towards Carbon Junction, a faultline trail that leads towards Horse Gulch, which research has shown me was a possible alternate route either traveling west or east. I will try to post more pics of this rock, for it has dates etched into it from the late 19th century on it's topside. Never would've thought it was so close...

Very nice photos! Thanks for those! My first question would be how close to the road is this? Could this have been "placed" when the road was built? If not, you may have a very interesting spot to check out. You would want to look 360 around the rock and on top of it before you can be sure what it means if anything.

Your second picture has details in the rock itself as to the meaning. You have to half close your eyes and such as they are faded and thousands of years old.

Trailmarker in SW CO

While driving on Hwy 550 north, just outside Durango, CO, I had noticed several flat rocks piled atop eachother. I had seen these rocks dozens of times and thought they looked quite peculiar. One day, while riding in the passenger seat, I looked up to see a large, flat rock, supported by several smaller ones that allowed daylight to be seen between them. Here are the pictures. I'm sending them to Whyte Eagle now... (Yes, I know about photobucket...)
