I will dig thru my stuff and see what I can do here for this site. I think I can add some pictures to this site. For the most part I do know a lot of the
history right in my head and I will try to put some now. Also I have taken many pictures of wildlife here in this area. It is excellant place and there are
herds of deer wintering here and so many Eagles are seen sitting in the Cottonwoods along Muddy Creek. They feed on the winter kill here.
Again this is on private land so be careful of what you are doing. You will be caught and this is a fact. The road is county road and so you can ride the road and view all of the wildlife here with your binoculars and bring your camera. You will pass close by the town and you can see it clearly. The kilns sits rite on the side of the road. The road is the original rail road track right of way. All of the railroad has now been moved to a new site and grade several miles away. Butch Cassidy was seen in this area very much. He played here and he bought supplies here. This is a fact. I would suggest reading Art Davidison's book, Sometimes Cassidy. Much of this book deals with this and surrounding area. Very few people would know just how much Butch was known around this area but it is a fact. Calimaty Janes father was killed in a gunfight here at Piedmont, WY. There was a train robbery held here in broad daylight. The robbers rode off and buried there take somewhere nearby. During the night the robbers returned and they where reconiced. They where both shot and killed and very little of the robbery money was recovered. That money has to be buried only several miles away. Now we jump to the historic golden spike days. The big celerbration and it was held in Utah somewhere and I will let someone else jump in and relate the story of where it was held..........The railroad workers had not been paid. They figured they where not going to be paid once the connection was made. Can you imagine that? They knew it would be history and their pay would be also. They stopped the train with the big wiggs on it right here in Piedmont and demanded all of there money right now. No one was allowed off of the train until they received all of the money for all of the railroad workers and I guess this was for everyone along the railroad. A telegram was sent and the money was finally sent forward on another train. This is actually in the history books and it was a big deal. The wiggs where held until the money was supplied. The big celebration and golden spike was being held up along with the actual connection and line being finished. The money was supplied and then the train was released to continue on its way. All railroad workers where now happy. I imagine that the Big wiggs where left unhappy and they probably figured they where taken to the cleaners. What a bunch of crooks! Does anything sound familiar and or different today? If you reach the Ghost town of Piedmont then look south and or SE on the hillside with your binoculars. You will see square fenced area on the distant hill side (several hundred yards). This is a cemetary and or boothill. There is much history envolving the Shonshoni Indians and Chief Washikie. He liked to camp along the Bear River in the Evanston,WY area. Of course Fort Bridger is not 15 miles to the east from Piedmont and the Indians anturally where around there. The Bridger Mountain Man Rendezvous is held here in Bridger ever Labor Day weekend in Sept. I highly suggest this event to everyone. From Bridger headed towards the Flaming Gorge you will run into the Henrys Fork and Cedar Butte. This was the actual site of the very first Mountain Man Rendezvous during 1825. Go northward to the Hamms Fork and there was several Mountain Man Rendezvous held there also. It lies about 60 miles northward from Evanston, Piedmont and Bridger. Also there on the Piedmont road and I believew it is actuall called LeRoy road for obvious reasons there is a Pony Express station site and a sign with historic marker for the Mormon Trail and campsite (not today) with water year around on the Muddy Creek and it says that the Mormons stopped and camped there all of the time because there was good grass for the herds. Along the Kemmerer highway going north there are several ghost towns. These where coal mining towns during the railroad days. Of course Kennmerer was a coal mining town also. This is the home of the very first JC Penneys story and it is still open for business today. Cumberland, Carter, and Glenco 1&2 are located in the area. Evanston has survieved along with Kemmerer. Almy was a coal mining town and it laid just north of Evanston. Almy is still a community with many living there. Along highway 89 going north you can see the old coal mines laying just east off of the highway. Twenty years back and there was a mine that still had fire burning in it. The deer would lay around on this warm ground during the winter. Steam would roll off of the ground during the winter and when it was wet from snow. Then Wyoming filled the holes with liguid nitrogen to put out the fires. It worked! No more deer lay around on the ground and there is no steam rolling off. Almy had coal mine accidents just as Park City had silver mine accidents. The towns would always send workers to help each other during these accidents to help try and dig out survivors. This is all off of the top of my head. I will dig around and see what I can come up with. I will find some pictures also. Lost |

Anybody here ever flew Piedmont Airline? Flying Piedmont was a horror story in the lesser art of trying to fly in a airplane.
