Actually the parachute project did the most extensive work on the gold in the shales that I'm aware of. More black than yellow gold though. Well, let me tell you a story about a man named Jed, but that's another story and fiction too.

You've been spying on me haven't you Brady.
Actually to all that have been following this thread on Sinbad and the swell, and metal enrichment, consider the thread under Off The Wall named Mars Face On Earth. I think in geologic process and time, the riddle proposed there applies here geogeek |

Well Herb,
When are we going out and pat it on the rear end? Before the eclipse or after? You know I'll have to decide which sunglasses to wear. I'm just too sexy for all my sunglasses anyway Seriously, Brett brought up a good point on the shale. And, I know he lives in the land of the summer snow. There is a reason for that summer snow. Is Brett007 coming along? What about JYOU18? What about you Brady? We're all feeling much better here. Could you tell? geogeek |

I can't speak for Bret, he is about 90 miles north of me but in the last three days we have gotten more snow here than we got all winter. Right now it's 20/20 here, 20 degrees and 20 MPH and the snow is blowing and drifting all over the place. It's snowing on Thousand Lakes Mt. and looks like it might be heading toward the Swell. I think I just might wait another day or two before volunteering to sleep out there in the back of my truck. I got an email from Bret around the first of the month and he indicated he is gettin the urge to get out and about, so am I. He wants to know if we get anything going and I hope he can make it as he knows of a lot of interesting things to see out there. I'd like to invite Floyd and Bookcliffe (Nick) to go along too. The weather will have to make a drastic change in this area soon if we're to do it, it gets really muddy out there after a thaw or rain and a week of dry sunny weather would be nice.

Herb,
I do not care who goes along as long as they are not violent greedy boneheads. I know enough of those already. I hear you on this last storm. We needed it though. We were popcorn dry. I was afraid someone would drive by and throw a cigarette butt out the window and burn this place to a crisp. It will be a while before we can make it out there. Are you still laughing at me? Remember, I have a feather army. geogeek |

Geez guys-- thanks fo the kind words... Id like to think I know a little of whats out there but the more I get out the less I find I know.
I have been in contact with Kim, who owns the Josephine De Martinique claims out above Eagle City. He seems to be a pretty smart guy and we are going to hook up sometime this year to take a look at some of the adits they have uncovered. We also are going to take a look at a small hole with a lot of potential that I found just below his claim. Think of what Frank Lawler said... I dont think he was lying. Anyway further on to the point, I am heading down to the Moab area on March 31st-April 2nd. I was going to do some wandering up Sego canyon and then see what else strikes me. Any of you guys going to be in the area and want to play tour guide? I dont really care about finding gold (unless its in large bar form--which reminds me of a map and recapture creek-Herb--chew my ear on this on the safari) but I would like to see some off the path petroglyphs, mines and history. LMK if anyone is interested in meeting down there, or if they have any good sites that I should see...(btw-- Brett is a good resource- he told me about an old Sundance hideout in the Nine mile area...need to go check that out-- Brett- you still out there??) hoping the weather will be nice too... Re: Shale | ||

Corey,
I guess you know Sego was changed radically. All the landmarks were removed for asthetic reasons. The last time I was there in '94 or '95, all I could do was huh? It would be re-exploration for me. I did remember some washes, cliff faces, and other land marks. But the town, the old foundations, and the coal mine dumps are now nearly extinct history except to a few. I understand your passion on ghost town preservation. Many of the pictographs are marked and fenced. You wouldn't need a guide for those. I suppose the other stuff was near modern trash and had to go away. Another cutting edge decision. My sister may be able to help you. I'll contact her and see if she is willing. Beyond that I would like to come along. I love all the field time I can get. At twelve years old I was well goegraphically acquainted with the area, but that was a while ago. geogeek |

I am located in Southern Utah, and I hear that Beaver Dam State Park has gold on the east inlet. The gold is actually coming from Goldstrike. Goldstrike itself
is private land last I checked, but you can legally pan the east inlet to Beaver Dam. I personally havnt been up there yet, because I just started into
prospecting as a hobby. I have done all my research of what I can and cant do, and a little on where I can and cant go. I hope to check it out soon. If there
are any other locations that I would be able to pan in Washington County or Iron county I would appreciate it. I know most people dont see yellow and tell
others, but I am just a weekend hobbiest (and new at this whole prospecting thing).

SirDraken,

lol, I have already been hit by the gold fever, I just dont have time to go out anymore than just the weekends. I am learning here and there about panning in
Utah. I am actually looking into southern nevada for panning also, and have ran across a couple places I want to check out when I get the time. But for now, I
am just locally test panning, I have been filling up buckets from different places around. All I can find is copper

Well your lost then to that gold fever...sorry...ha ha. Southern Arizona huh? I have several friends that make regular trips down there to look for gold.
Most of them use metal detectors or dry washers and seem to have pretty good luck. There is another way to pan and ( you might know about it already ) it's
called dry panning. Skill is involved but it is effecient if water isn't available. Anyway enjoy your panning wherever you pan. If you can come out
Colorado way the week-end of May 10th & 11th. the Gold Prospectors of Colorado are holding their annual "Let's Go Gold Panning" on the
Arkansas River at Wellsville..5 miles below Salida, Colorado. Camping is free and all kinds of equipment from pans to Dredges and highbankers plus drywashers
will be available for folks to watch in operation. We can't be there this year because we'll be in another state but there's some really nice
folks to meet and make life long friendships.

lol, northern Arizona is still on the menu for locations, but southern is a bit far. lol. If I had any idea on where that place in Colorado was, and wasnt to
far I would consider it. Thanks for the information. I would only dry pan to check and see if there is gold, if so take some buckets and fill em up, and pan
them in the backyard. lol

Gold in Willard and Perry is a myth. Go a little farther south and you might have a little luck. Filled the bottom of my pan with silver after crushing some
rocks above the old flying J. Theres a real nice mine right up that canyon. Take something to crush the rock and you might find something nice in it.

I found a few little flecks of gold in Willard canyon a bunch of years ago. I saw a small nugget that Paul Badalli dredged out of Willard creek once upon a
time. (At least he said he dredged it out there) I've never heard of any gold being found in Perry Canyon. A guy (I don't remember his name) said he
found a few flecks of gold in Bair Canyon above Fruit Heights. Fred Kippen up in Porterville (just a few milles south of Morgan) says that hes saw guy pan out
some gold from Hardscrabble Creek once a long time ago but you can't get up there now. (private property, gates and stuff) Bill Rigby of Centerville
claims that when they were drilling a well for his new home on Ricks Creek (Ford Canyon) they found some gold. All in all, a whole lot of talk but not much
action.

I think anything in Willard Canyon is a 1 in a million. The geology of that range is such that the gold bearing rock dives pretty deep when it goes through
there. A couple of canyons south the vein is visible and diving down. It harder to work, you really need a little hand crusher to work it right.
1/2 way up the trail in Willard canyon there are some prospect holes. Nice quartz with copper and other mineralization. Found a very old pick bar buried in a rockslide there. I've got a deal working an a little over 1000 acres in the vicinity. Pretty nice area with lots of mineralization. If I pull this deal off I'll put together an outing or something and we can go see whats up there. |
