That was actually a fun little article. Amazingly accurate in some of the details. I love all things Ancient Egyptian. The little figures that were buried with
the Pharoahs as servants were called Ushabtis. They were to come to life and serve him in the after life. Thank you for sharing this, I really enjoyed it!

On my 3rd trip into the Valley of the Kings, I was visiting the last of the tombs that were open at that time. For a simple bribe of maybe $20, I could have
got some mummy scraps to take hope. Unfortunately, for that tomb guard, I was tired of bribing everyone by that time, so I left empty handed.
I did pick up some little carved figures in an antique shop in Luxor. Seems like there was a thriving industry back around 1900 to make souveniors like that. Anyway, they are interesting to look at. |

travel to Egypt... | ||

I don't recall feeling in danger during my entire visit (except maybe the bus ride through Cairo). I visited Luxor a couple of years after the tourists
were killed by terrorists. I will mention that we had a police escort and had to travel as a convoy to go from the coast of the Red Sea (Hurghada) to Luxor.
So, unless they were paranoid, there must have been something to defend against. Of course, it could have just been thieves.
I spent one week scuba diving off a liveaboard in the Red Sea. It is not bad, although it reminded me of a colder South Pacific ocean. We then spent several days in Luxor, visiting the Valley of the Kings, the Luxor and Karnak temples, and the temple of Hetsapsut (sp). Anyway, there is really good bang for the buck at Luxor. There is also the Ramaseum and other stuff there, which I saw on a later trip. After coming back from Kenya, I then took a 1 week hotel trip up the Nile to Aswan. They have these really large 3 or 4 story floating hotels that go back and forth on the Nile. They are designed perfectly so they can fit in the locks along the Nile. There are several temples along the way that are worth visiting (Edfu, I think). At Aswan, there are several locations to visit. One is an island just below the old dam, in downtown Aswan. You can also take a boat trip out to some ruins out on Lake Nassar. I think those ruins were moved to a new locations, so they wouldn't be underwater. And, likewise, you can take a quick trip out to Abu Simbel, where they have the 4 huge Ramses statues, etc. Again, that had been moved, to get it above water. Those are all great things to do. Unfortunately, I only got to spend a few hours in Cairo. I was able to see the light show at the Giza pyramids, as well as have dinner nearby, but it was too dark to really do any exploring. And, basically, I missed everything between Cairo and Luxor, or from Cairo to the coast, for that matter. So, there is lots more to see. It would be interesting to see about a boat trip from Luxor to Cairo, if reasonable sleeping arrangements can be found along the way. I guess it just depends on how much roughing there is to be done. Anyway, it seems like everyone is on the take there. I got a little overboard in bribing everyone I met, but it did get me into a few interesting places in temples or ruins that most people never get to see. Well, that's enough for now. |

Egypt trip | ||

I have just returned from the same trip described by PT. A week sailing down the Nile in a "floating hotel" visiting the sites at Edu, Kom Onbo,
Aswan and Abu Simbel Luxor and karnak, and all the West bank Sites. It was a bit warm (56 degree C!!) so most of the visits took place in the early morning
(2.30 am start for Abu Simbel). I would agree with everything PT says about the people and the country. It is just marvelous. The ancient sites are mind
blowing in their technolocal achievement and sheer beauty. Some of the decoration on the walls is literally breathtaking. We had a marvelous guide who put
everything in perspective and kept us fully informed. Highlights:Abu Simbel, the Luxor Museum and the Tombs of the Nobles that contained wall carvings of
indescribable ethereal beauty.
The local people are friendly and well meaning, if a bit "pushy" by our standards when soliciting custom and tips, but it's all very good natured and well meaning. Bartering for everything is fun and we soon got into the hang of it. They are not trying to rip off anyone, just to arrive at a price everyone is happy with. You should make the trip. It's one of the essential things to do before you die. |

P.S. | ||

P.S. ....but Cairo is a cess-pit...unless you really want to see the Pyramids I wouldn't bother.
P.P.S....and you will get "the runs" so take plenty of Imodium and antiseptic wipes. |

A floating hotel up the Nile! That is something I must do. It sounds fabulous! I have now heard about the BIG things you guys saw, but I would love to know
about any small things you guys noticed while you were there. Any markings or symbols that intrigued you? Also PICS! We must have pics!

The oldest and most beautiful, elegant building at Karnak is the White Chapel. We had to go hunting for it in the Open Air Museum and it is breathtaking, achingly beautiful. It is built of alabaster and the carvings are so detailed and intricate as to elicit tears of wonder, awe and respect for those long dead craftsmen. |
