If it does not look bad---then sit down on or beside it for 10-30 minutes---what kind of feeling is it giving you?? Does it upset your stomach? Does it give you a headach? Does it give you a feeling of dread or make you very uncomfortable? Where are the closest boulders? Do you as you walk around it see allagators?? Snakes?? Lightning Bolts??? Can you photograph the site at low light--say the crack of dawn?--when the camera will just barely work?? Then take a magmometer and sweep the site in a fifty foot circle // then a 100 foot circle Then sweep the site in a fifty foot circle with a pulse induction electronics // then a hundred foot circle Then search the site with ground penetrating Radar---does it cone? does it show blue?? does it show metal?? Now you can begin to make some basic decisions!! Barton

He does have some very good info but is knowen to steal info and sites as well. My friend had a claimable site he had SS help track. This was my friends site to begin with and SS put a claim on it knowing my friend was just about to put a claim on the land well he found out that ol SS was a flee bitten dog who spreads flees, So ya I understand what you meant by that and there is no hard feelings. I just dont like to bad mouth anyone I didnt know if there were any of his friends on this site and I dont like to start crap. I like a calm relaxing atmosphere to study not Bickering. So this make me feel alot better knowing this. I am sorry about your friend I am sure hes a great guy. Maybe we should call ol SS out and give him the what for. It takes alot of time and research to read through all the books available along with the research in the field to prove the theories. It would be nice if there was one complete book with every possible meaning and theory that everyone could use. Along with archives and such. Including all death traps and death warnings. monuments. But there may never be one. Maybe down the road all of us on here can put our knowledge to gether and write a combined book on the whole knowledge and meanings as a group. That would be impressive. Dupsounds and to whoever else I will just write here and put down some of what I actually think I have learned since following signs and symbols for a short period of time. You can take my input for what ever you think it is worth. Let me make it totally clear to all that I have never found what I have been looking for. I am not talking about a little bit of fine flour gold or silver and lead flacks. I am talking about gold that can be carried out on your back and you have something. I mean lots of it and you have some money then. Pure gold as Caleb stated being a five niner. 99.999% pure! This will work for me. Let's hear it from all here and we certainly do not want me to go uneducated here do we? The gold dust and small silver flakes is a game to me. I could care less about it and I am looking for the big one. When I have walked away with the goods then I will consider myself lucky and successful. I will have accomplished what I actually set out to do 26 years ago. As someone said here, "The proof is in the pudding!" Now for the Aspen, I too have been told by the National Forest that an Aspen lives to be from 75 to 120 years old. This is just great! We have experts in the field with this evaluation. Nothing like experts I always say. Idiots! Get the message here. I am evidently the real fool here. What in the hell do I actually know but I can tell you that I am not the expert National Forest guy who is sitting in his office drinking a hot coffee as he is kicked back hoping that someone will give him a call so it will break his boredom. If he is lucky he will sell a wood cutting permit today. Maybe he can sell a Christmas tree permit! He sure as hell is not out in the field trying to take care of the Beatle kill is he and that is evident. I guess we need a great depression to get that taken care of. Then a work program will be set up for us to go out and chop down the trees and burn them. Reckon they could get a collage kid to do that today? For crying out loud, that would be a job that us Americans would not want to do and they would let an illegal do that. Me and my attitude! Now I am saying that an Aspen lives for a few hundred years. When you see and Aspen that is two foot thick and or in diameter you had better figure you are looking at an old tree. It could possibly be 400 years old. I have a trunk of an Aspen tree sitting in my garage today still drying. This tree fell last year in a high wind and it has a carving of a medicine man on it. I was not just going to sit and let the tree rot away. It is art work and history at its best. It is two foot in diameter and I cut the carving out by removing approximately 4 and ½ foot of the tree. It is fun following the trails for my wife and me along with our son who also does this. Here this year my granddaughters also went out and one found a S&S. It is pure history and neat to do. If we can find a new S&S then it has been well worth while. I have seen it where on some days we will find many. Other days we find nothing. I will take pictures and a GPS location and put the info away. I can then return to the tree anytime. It can then also be passed on to your family members. For those wanting to learn something then I am saying listen and learn here. This is the way I have done it. You can say I am full of BS if that is what you want to do. I have always used the Lost Rhoades Mine books as my waybill. I read them and I learn them. You might just read them once but I read them until I know them. I pull out maps and I do use a National forest map to start with. I take a yellow highlighter and I will mark the area being discussed in the books. Let's say we are talking about Dale Bascom's book, Following the Legends, and he is discussing the Sacred Mine. Of course his book says the area is at the Paradise Lake area. I would take and highlight that area and then get into that area and search for signs and symbols. I am carrying my camera and my GPS. Now we are off to a good start and we are hoping for the best. I am of course taking it for granted that you did buy a few Spanish S&S books that are out there. You will know what you are looking for this way. I have had people tell me that there is none better than Gale Rhoade's Book, Waybill to Lost Spanish Mines and Treasure. Of course these S&S pictures where all mostly taken in the Uintas as for as the pictures go. At least this is what he indicated. Gale said that he took some of these pictures to Collage professors and they would laugh. They asked him if he really though that these S&S where for real. They said that the trees could not have lived that long. That is the big question isn't it? Yet Gale said that those same S&S would lead him right to mines and smelters. Funny how that works isn't it? I will look for every carving I can find on a tree. Modern day stuff is fine because I have found that today's people want to carve there name and date on a tree right beside a Spanish marked tree and or even on it. This is sad but true!......I am saying leave things just as you have found them. Never mark a tree. It only makes it harder for the next person to come in and follow. Yes I will admit that I am saying I look for modern day carvings. Still I am saying it is a shame that we are messing up the history here when we carve on trees in the area. Leave it for others to photograph also. Don't you want your son to have the same opportunity as you did? On a trail the S&S will be fairly easy to follow. They will line right up on the trail and be fairly close. I have found them to be not too much further apart than several hundred yards and a lot of times they are much closer. Take notice that there is a cross at the top. This is a Spanish Church Mine. It is also a Kings Mine is it not. In order for the Church to get a cut it had to be a Kings Mine. The King got his Royal Fifth and or 20% and then he gave the Catholic Church there 20% off of his cut. We are definitely talking about a Church Mine here. This Spruce is dead and the top has blown out of it. The carving is approximately 1 and ½ inch deep and this is with the bark completely gone off of the tree. Please take note that we do have graffiti on the carving also. What a shame! This tree is not on the trails that I have been following lately. Do any of you remember the movie Phenomenon with John Travolta staring in it? In this movie he said that the largest living organism was an Aspen and this was because of the root system. The root system spreads and grows and trees come up along the root system. You got an aspen in your yard then you know this. They soon are growing all over the place. Go into the Forest to get one to plant into your yard and if you grab the root you can follow it to another tree. Now I will tell some history and some good points to be made to all of you along with this. This info concerning Heber Beall can be found in George Thompson's book, Footprints in the Wilderness dealing with the North Slope. My first mine found was found because I had learned something. I had been reading a prospecting book and it said that a definite line of a different color and or shade of tree could indicate a line of mineralization. The trees grow on that mineralization and they may be a different color due to the mineralization that they are getting. I spotted this one day on a hillside and I said to myself I am going to find a gold deposit. I climbed up and I could not believe it. Right there I found my first gold mine. Well except it had been all mined out and it was totally collapsed. There was much work done here and it was evident. There was much tailing visible here. Here at this mine sat many Aspen trees. Many of them had been carved on by the Beall family. I took that name and passed it around until I got the info I needed. I got a phone number for a Beulah Beall. Her dad was Heber Beall and he was a coal miner in the Evanston, Wy coal mines in the older days. He would mine coal at the railroad mines during the winter and then in the summer he would take off and mine gold in the Uinta Mountains during the summer. He had found and or located this particular mine that had been mined by the Spanish and he picked up right where they had left off. He continued to mine gold profitably until he reached the slipped fault area and then the gold went to where ever and he could never pick it up again. Maybe the fault slipped 200 foot to the left and or maybe it slipped 200 foot to the right. Maybe it slipped two hundred foot underneath but it does not matter as he could never pick it up again. He found other structures and mines and continued to mine his whole life. His daughter told me she could remember a quart jar with gold nuggets in it. I think that is how the story went. He mined anything and everything that was profitable. I found a Sulfur mine and a Uranium mine also that he had mined. Beulah never gave me any information on but one of his mines and this one I had already found. She also told me of another but she said that it had fallen in so much that her father got scared of it and pulled right out. He never mined there again on that mine and she told me there was good gold that he was getting out of that mine. There would still be good gold in it today. Remember he was a very experienced miner and he and his brothers and sons did this for basically a life time. They pulled out because it had fallen in a number of times. It was very dangerous. On these Aspens at this mines there were many carvings done by the Beall Family. The dates ranged from the 19 teens to the 1940's if I recall right. I had told Beulah that a huge Aspen had impressed me that stood right in front of the mine entrance. Beulah told me that Aspen was a huge tree when she was just a little girl. Ok, this tree was a two foot in diameter tree. It was old and it showed it. I had called in say 1985 maybe. She had just turned 65 years of age and was fixing to retire from the National Forest Service. So now I am guess-to-mating that she was born in 1920. This is reasonable to say. So now we will say she was 10 years old when she recalled being a little girl. This makes it 1930. This tree is 2 foot in diameter and just how long did it take to get this big? What we have on the North Slope of the Uintas is a growing season that I saw this year to be approximately 3 months long. That's right, I saw some Aspen trying to bud out on the 10^th of July where I was camped at. Now in Sept we have the fall colors turning and leaves starting to shed. Boy what a growing season and again just how many years are you thinking that it would have taken an Aspen to grow 2 foot in diameter. 25 years ago I saw trees that where 5 to 8 inches in diameter that had carvings on them and now guess how much bigger they are today? Any guess out there? I am saying not enough difference to actually notice in any way. Funny how that works isn't it? If the NF says that Aspen basically lives to be 75 to 120 years old then this tree is basically on the short end say 1/3 of its life. Yes the tree is small but it looks as health as ever. So now for something to think about here we can have two trees that are the exact same age but only a couple of hundred feet apart but whoa, just a minute here. One tree is 2 foot in diameter and it is obviously a big and old tree. Then just a couple of hundred feet away we have another and it is only 10 inches in diameter. How can this be? One tree stands right by running water and there is also more mineralization. Naturally we have more nutrients for this tree and the other is out in the open and it is wind blown so the little bit of moisture it has is sucked right out of the ground by the sun and the wind. There are no nutrients either. Can this make any kind of difference at all? Let's not be stupid here and I think we can all see the point. I am saying that the size of the tree makes little difference in knowing the actual trees age. How in the hell can someone sit there and tell you that tree is not big enough and or old enough to actually have Spanish carvings on them. As for the scaring on the tree that forms after it has been carved on this is questionable also. The size of the tree and the growth actually causes this scaring as far as what I see and can think of. The tree grows and the scare tissue gets larger. It keeps spreading until the tree is hard to read. The scare ends up growing and or spreading out over into the center of the letters and even in-between the letters. Dupsounds you have pictures of this in your slide show. Then the bark starts falling off as the tree starts its dieing process. It just doesn't up and die in one day. It is a process that takes years. This works the same as for us doesn't it. You sit and watch a person go down hill for a lot of years as they get older and weaker and start losing there thinking process and or get dementia. They start developing heart diseases and other things. Maybe they lose there hearing and or they start losing their eyesight. It is a process that the tree goes thru the same as us. The trees get older and the bark gets thicker and then it goes to peeling off. Limbs start falling out of the tree. The tree is weaker and the bugs take a bigger toll on it. Then also we can be killed instantly when we are in an auto accident and a tree could just as easily be killed as fast when a snow slide comes down on it and or a wind blows it over and or lightning hits the tree. Then we have our S&S tree lying on the ground desecrating with rot and the bugs. What the hell did that tree say? That was the whole key here and now it is gone! My opinions here are just that. Any body can laugh and giggle at me. I am saying that my thinking works for me. That is all that really matters to me. I am welcoming any suggestions here. I am also welcoming any questions here and I will do the best I can to come up with an answer to all. It may not be right but I will do my best. Following is some more S&S. The walls are approximatly two foot thick. This is naturally the insillatation. It gets cold here. Some of these pictures are in George Thompsons book also where is is talking of the North Slope and Heber Beall. Take notice of the trees growing inside the walls. I have no explanation for the plaster and mortar or whatever showing in the one picture. My thinking is that the Beall family was trying to hold the walls together to keep history from falling away. The side walls are gone and totally colapsed with no signs of motar what so ever. I would think that they would have used clay for the chalking. I am no construction engineer so I really do not know. George Suggest in his book as you can see that they may have been smelters. I doubt this as they where way to big and never have my wife and or I found any gold with our metal detectors. There are several gold and silver mines in the surrounding area. Here where these sites site there is a Spansih Sulfer mine. George in his book said that they used the sulfur for gunpowder production. The Beall family moved in and went to work and mined all of the sulfur out. My guess is that it was originally a tunneled mine but then Beall move in and after it was over with the laws said it had to be closed off. He would have just taken and destroyed the tunnels. He may have done this earlier and then went to an open pit mine. The sulfur can still be seen on the rocks as it is yellow and you can smell it easily. I have never found signs and symbols left by the Spanish in this area. Several miles away this year I did find a lightning bolt carved on a tree indicating danger. Lost

Wished I would have thought about this first. First let me say that I know an individual that has been a lifer her in this area for ever. He has had some input to me also on the Aspens. He told me it was virtually impossible to date an Aspen. At the time I was thinking about buying a core drill. He told me not to waste my money. Another individual has told me that some of our miners at the turn of the 1900's may have actually carved onto trees to mark there claim. Do I know this? No I do not but then at the Beall Mine there was everybodys name carved on the Aspens. Now for the Medicine Man! Look at the picture again and you can see it was an old tree. It blew over in strong wind and last year it was bad for the wind. I had to get up on my roof more than once to repair some blown and damaged shingles. Anyway the tree was pulled out of the ground by its roots. Of course the root system was basically gone and this alone contributed to the tree blowing over. The roots around the tree broke off about one foot out. As for the tree itself when I made my cut wet sawdust was flying. In some places the saw just about fell thru. The core was gone. You could reach in and just pull out the wet rooted material. Outside the core it is hard to see anything other than the how do I want to put it here. It looks like dust that is glued together. You can not see any rings at all. Now when I get to it I will take and put a sander on it. Maybe this might smooth it out some. Then possibly the rings just might become visible. I then can make a rough calculation if any rings are visible. I have to make some finishing cuts on the tree and then take a sander and put it onto it. I want the tree to stand upright level. I am going to spray it with varnish to hold the bark into place forever and to put a finish on it that will definitly be protective. Then I have a slabbed Yellow Pine that is about 4 foot across. This slab actually came out of California and individuals that where moving gave it to me. I have had it for 20 some odd years now. I will take and route out a cirlcle for the slap to sit on top of the Aspen. Then it will be glued & screwed down. I will first carry the slap to a glass place and have them cut out perfectly a plastic piece about 3/8 inch non reflecting. This will then be screwed down on top of the slab. I am going to place pictures of S&S and mines under the plastic cover to remind me of the goot times I have had. I also have a collection of old Spansh Reals that I may route out a place for. Presto a small bar table. I will buy some nice barstools and drink a beer. I may play a game of pool and listen to some music. It will be my first! I did just tell a small lie. Lost for sure!

Also it is with out a doubt spanish markings It was in a line of trees that lead to a mine. And just like people some age fast and some age very slowly. So I would agree totally on that. I have seen many dead aspens and none of them had visable rings to count and I would have to guess that it would take more than one year for the tree to create a ring on an Aspen. For example if the tree only has a 3 month growth period each year compared to say an Elm tree wich grows 9 months of the year it would take an Aspen 3 or 4 years for what should be 1 grow season. So take a 300 yr. old tree and devide it by 4 and you now have what a so called expert would call a 75yr. old tree thats actually 300 yrs old. There may be 600 yr old aspens out there if not older. I didnt want to upset the experts but I will agree there are very very old aspen trees and they grow at the tops and the base takes many many years to become thick depending on the neutrients availabe to it. The 8 inch tee i have I would extimate to be 250 yrs old at least and probably more like 300 yrs old. its at the top of a hill in good cover but very little water or neutrients. and is the last marker to a mine. 1/2 leage a way in the exact direction that the symbol on the tree gave. The mine is obviously several hundred years old. And in this location its not likely a rancher or hiker put it there its not on a trail and its in a very thick area. But 2 or 300 yrs ago this could very well have been a trail. There is no ranches around this area no cows or sheep ect. and not a likly place for a hiker. Great input Lostaslost Makes the most sense to me so far. There are certain markings, theres just no way a hiker or rancher put there and too complex.

I have to say I have always been skeptical of these symbols on these kind of trees. Maybe tree ring dating doesn't work with aspens properly. If a tree has a very short growing period, the rings may be so close together that they can't be counted. Also the bark of an aspen seems to be thin, more like a skin than bark. Sand the end of the log Lost with some fine grit sandpaper. The finer the paper the better the shine. If you still can't make out individual rings, put a coat of polyurethane clear over it. I'd like to see a picture of that and we can all judge for ourselves.

Rockman is pretty dead on: Equipment needed to prepare tree-ring samples includes electric hand planers, belt sanders, stains, and an assortment of different grits of sand paper and sanding belts. Mounted aspen core and disk samples should be sanded with a belt sander, using progressively finer grits of belts from 150, 240, and 320. Then they should be sanded by hand using a 400 grit sheet and finally a microfinishing film sheet of 15 m grade. Disk surfaces should first be leveled off using an electric hand planer. Then a belt sander with progressively finer grits from 150 to 400 should be used to prepare surfaces for ring analysis. If the thorough sanding of aspen samples is completed and the tree rings are still difficult to distinguish (figure 1B), a stain should be applied. Fehling's Solution (Forest Products Laboratory 1962) works well to distinguish sapwood from heartwood in aspen. It stains the latewood portion of the tree rings a dark brown and thus makes ring identification easier (figure 1C). The mix contains 3.5 g copper sulphate (CuSO4 . 5H2O), 17.3 g potassium sodium tartrate, 6.0 g sodium hydroxide, and 100.0 ml water. Conclusion Aspen annual growth rings are much easier to see when samples have been prepared using these techniques. The extra effort needed to collect and prepare samples in this manner will result in more accurate age and growth determinations and facilitate the identification and measurement of tree-ring growth patterns for dating disturbance events in aspen forests. I may go out in the garage and take a piture of what it looks like right now and post it. The carving is still there as plan as day but there is no visible rings. The bark is only a thin layer and or skin. As the tree gets older then a heavy thicker material forms upward from the base. Any scare gets thicker. I really do not know hw to explain it. Any rate you can see where a paper starts to peel off when the tree goes to dieing. I frget put I think that someone told me that they had taken a piece of this paper material and laid it down and covered it with varnish and it showed the carvings really well. I forget what they said it was mounted on. I personaly would not thinck that it could be done like this as when the bark peels it is kind of like here and there and or it is coming apart. Yes I have seen some farily large pieces of it hanging though. I need to make it a point to get started on my tree. It has been sitting on a couple of two by fours for now about one year. I wanted there to be some circulation under the tree to help with the drying process. I have seen a spider crawling into the tree and so I need to do something before I start a hatchery of bugs and spiders at the tree. I will make it a point to get started on it. About half of the rot was pulled out of it. I should have taken the time to pull all of it out. Lost

He carries a cross in one hand and in the other hand a sword that goes around the tree and over the Eagles head. Take notice that the head of the knight is a circle with a dot indicating by some as gold. does a dot always mean gold? I guess you can't use the term "always" in regards to symbols but although the following pictures of petroglyphs is more than likely of native american origin, could it indicate "treasure here" using the dot?
