The first of the trees had a large flower symbol with seven petals, the topmost petal was/is shaded in. It also had two leaves, one on each side. Looks like a map to me. On the other side there is an odd symbol that looks like an upright oval with a half-circles on each side.
On the second tree it has in script the names "Felix Ducero," "Froin(?)," and "Montrose."
The third tree has a sitting bird and several vaguely "G" "C" and "H" carvings in it that are underscored by what looks like a large handlebar moustache.
Didn't have my camera with me, but I drew it in my notebook. I've heard that the petals represent leagues.
When I reached the basin with the cabin ruin on a whim I hiked up behind the cabin to see the basin better. Behind the cabin there is a faint trail that I hiked up about 25 yards. On the trail there is an very old aspen with the name Pedro Herrera carved in script with the date 1822. Around the other side are a series of numbers that I didn't write down.
The trail leads around a little South to a formation of conglomerate spires. One of the middle spires has a plugged opening in the base. It is a rough and steep hike over loose talus to get to the opening. The plug is cement and has a brass plaque inset.
Has anyone else seen these tree signs or know why the opening was plugged?
