If it is a code it doesn't mean that the code was left by Jesse, although it could have been. The photo is definitely interesting. If it's a code then the "instructions" on where the money is is in the name and maybe even the date. If I were trying to decode this I would say the inscription gives information about the treasure (if there is one) and what to look for. The word "passage" in this case probably doesn't refer to the cave but the writing itself, telling you to look in the writing for the clues. "76 in this cave" jumps out as being important, "returned" (aka reverse) and "77" (two points that are alike) also would be important but not together. The name could be giving you pictures of what to look for and how to travel. That is, if this is treasure related. Courage is being scared to death- but saddling up anyway. I don't know when his gang was in Minnesota scouting out the area and buying horses to use in the raid before Sept 7 1876, but certainly awhile prior to Sept 7th.

If you assume that this is treasure related I would say the first S in Jesse would be very important along with the last E in Jesse and the W. The two dots on either side of the W repeat themselves on either side of the 29 in Aug 29 and possibly even on either side of the 76. The fact that the name and date are larger than the message would be important and the the fact they are in two different writing styles would be important and would differentiate between how they would be used. If you look closely at the top of the first S in Jesse you will see symbol (small triangle or pointer) that has appeared on more than one JJ map, also in the letter S. They were hot on my track???so who has time to do carvings??? and the last line sounds like he didn't find it again...so why tell the world???lot of logic puzzles with this one...I always wonder when someone loses a treasure... (:X

Those are the kinds of things most people miss. There is undoubtedly some information hidden in the text of the message. He started hiding things with the original date by hiding the number 8 by using the month of August. The "hot on my track" statement may simply be pointing out the word "track" telling you that you need to find something, maybe as simple as a turkey track to follow or begin at. It all depended on the medium that they were "writing" on. The style of writing can and will be different if you are carving in something as compared to writing on a piece of paper. There are some very interesting things in this carving. Since I don't know where it is located and haven't looked at the site I can only guess but this would appear to be a good hoax or it is treasure related. I think there is enough info in the carving for it to be a map provided there are some specific clues in the area of the carving. Courage is being scared to death- but saddling up anyway. The way they make an f, or an a, or an s, etc. Considering that, and the fact that if this is a map by Jesse James, and he wasn't trying to hide the fact obviously, (he signed it) then he also would not have tried to hide his writing style. This isn't carving just using basic alphabet, it has style, someone, maybe Jesse, spent a lot of time carving it. There are plenty of letters here in this carving to compare with other known writings or carvings. The point I'm making, is that if the writing style matches then that gives credibility to the map. Personally, and this is my opinion only, if I was a notorious outlaw, and used many different aliases over time, I probably wouldn't sign my name to anything where someone would see it, if I had loot buried nearby. I would use another name. Especially if I was Jesse James, most well known outlaw in the world, because anything with my name on it would draw the attention of everyone to the spot to look for my buried loot. Be like going to an island and finding a map on a rock signed by "Captain Kidd". Yee Haw, got to be buried treasure! But...if no loot was buried, or had been picked up, then why not carve the name? No need to worry about drawing attention then, eh? Having seen the name Jesse James carved in caves a few times, I am a bit skeptical right off. But I'm not a Jesse James expert..so take what I say with a grain of salt.

In his letters his writing style appears to be mostly the same but in the 2-3 carved things they have all been different. You can look at the copper map that JJ carved on and if you believe JJ made the copper map you can compare it also. These two things show very different styles in some of the writing but there are one or two symbols that show up that are also in this carving. I wish I could see the carving better. I would like to know how the N's are made. I know that JJ used his initials at some places where he left carvings. It would be my opinion that at the time (1870s) JJ wasn't that famous like he is now and It would also be my opinion that JJ wanted to be that famous and therefore would have left his name behind. I would agree that the carving should be looked at as suspect merely for the reason that his name is carved there. As Softy pointed out, this would have had to have been tow carvings made at two different times if you beleive the date is a date. Otherwise, something just ain't right here. It's either a fake or a code. If it's a fake then it was done by someone knowlegeable in treasure hunting and the symbols used by JJ and some others.
