Howdy lost, You may be on to something very good! My sister (Jerry Ann) was looking through Gale's book of symbols and found one which is almost identical
to your top symbol. Gale calls it a Malteze cross and says you have arrived at a mine or treasure. Good luck...Don't spend it all in one place.

Now if you can just find it again.
True equality-the power to make a successful stand against tyranny-inevitably flows from the barrel of a gun.

Interesting picture I can see the 8 points that could be taken as a maltese cross.
it almost looks like it contains the a flower incorporating the cross I can't see it well enough from the picture to tell. |

It doesn't look like a malteze cross to me either. Search me why Gale calls something like this a cross. It looks more like an expedition symbol to me.
What are some other ideas?

I usually can't make out anything that people say they're seeing in pics they post but in this case I can see why one might call that a Maltese cross.
Others probably could too if each of the four ends of the cross were closed rather than open. In this way, it reminds me of the Mason square and compass
which is really two interlocking triangles but it isn't obvious because only two of the three lines that form each triangle are represented.

That symbol reminds me of the German Alpine Edelweiss, but I don't know of what it might mean carved into a tree. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Edelweiss_badge.jpg
