My grandfathers construction company was called into help with the recovery efforts at the mine. It was quite a disaster. My grandfather said it was haunted
and the family should never go there. Incidentally there are photo plates of the recovery team at BYU and available online.

About 2 years after the Willburg Mine Fire there were reports that sections of that mine were haunted. Also at the Deer Creek Mine where I worked they used one
part of the old Mickinnena mine in the ventilation system for Deer Creek there is the story of Joe Pickalow. This guy was a fire boss in the old mine and was
killed there. Any way when our fire boss's do there weekly's they sometimes say they see his name, time and date from the day before or maybe just a
couple of hours ago. If the name of Joe Pickalow sounds familiar Joe's son is the mayor of Price, Utah during the Crandle Mine cave-in.

When I was metal detecting at the old Spring Canyon Coal Company Mine area a number of years ago, I talked to some people that were camped up there and they
claimed that there is a woman in a black dress that haunts this area. A ghost or spirit. I never saw her in the few times I've visited this location.
Were they just pulling my leg? I did find a few wheat pennies and a trade token and lots of metal washers there. It's a pretty place and has alot of
ruins. It's been along time since I last visited there and so I'm unaware of the access to this site now.

Lets do it. Next spring? There are a lot of old mines in that area to be seen but to my recollection they are all old abandoned coal mines. Might find some
goodies, read nails, with a metal detector, maybe even some coins in the foundations of the old buildings. I'll bet Bret knows all about the mines in that
area, I'll drop him an email and see what I can get out of him.

Don't get all sweaty just yet. Bret emailed me and said that he thinks that Schofield area is all private property. He seems to recall that the owners
will let people go visit but he's not sure and is going to try to get some more info for us. I'll keep you updated as I get the info.

When I went up there last year I stopped at the gate. A guy just happened to come out of the gate going the other way.
He said I could go through that gate (the 1st one) and up to the 2nd gate but needed to turn around there because everything beyond it was private. He said he was a ranch hand for the owners. Hard to remember now but don't think it was more than a mile to second gate. Was hoping to get a shot of the 1 remaining building with a telephoto lens, but couldn't see anything because of the angle the canyon way in the distance was situated in relation to the gate and some bluffs. So I turned around and left. After opening and driving through the first gate which was made of steel; when I went to close it, the top hing broke and that heavy son of a gun landed on my foot. Felt as if it broke all the bones across my foot. Fortunately it did not. Hurt for about a week.
That is all I know about getting up there. |

I haven't heard anymore from Bret, maybe he just hasn't gotten up there yet. If, as Flap posted, it is gated private land then it'd be pretty much
of a waste of time and fuel to go see the gate. We still have some time before it starts warming up. It was 2 degrees here this morning and finally got up to
20. Winds up to 38 mph yesterday and a fairly heavy horizontal snow just after sundown last evening. You don't want to be camping out in this kind of
weather. But then hot coffee with some coco and just a wee bit of whiskey in the morning would be good. Looking at all that snow outside and the thermometer
made me go make up a crock pot of my world famous chili, no, wait, that is award winning baked beans, anyway, I'm going to have a nice bowl of hot chili
before long, y'all come on down, there'll be plenty.
