Yes, the Hill Shim (of the Jaredites) is near the Hill Cumorah (where the Nephites were destroyed) and the Hill Ramah is the same as the Hill Cumorah. However, I do not believe that this Hill Cumorah is in New York State.

Cumorah is where Mormon hid the majority of the records, not where Moroni hid the small plates (see my previous post). They are two distinctly different locations. What did Joseph Smith find in the New York hill? Did he find the great depository of plates that Mormon describes burying in the Hill Cumorah? No, he just found the small plates of Moroni, which Mormon removed from the main depository of plates and gave to Moroni to finish his record. Moroni traveled the land for many years before finally hiding up the gold plates. He fled the area of the final battles (the Hill Cumorah.) Had he returned to that area swarming with hostile Lamanites he would have quickly been killed and the plates destroyed. He evidently journeyed northward, away from the concentration of Lamanites, and eventuallly buried these small plates in the New York hill.

The reall Hill Cumorah was a very prominant landmaark to both the Jaredites and the Nephites. It was the location to which their armies gathered from throughout the land for these final battles. If you've ever been to the New York Hill Cumorah you know that this is not a large or prominent hill, nor is it the only hill in the area. You can hike from bottom to top in probably 10 minutes. It is not a prominant landmark to which hundreds of thousands of people would likely gather for a last battle.

Nowhere does Joseph Smith state, in the Joseph Smith History (PofGP) or elsewhere, that the hill in which he found the gold plates was the Hill Cumorah of the BOM.

So, why is the NY Hill Cumorah called such by LDS members? Maybe because of the confusion by early members between the burial place of the majority of plates by Mormon (Hill Cumorah of Central America) and the burial place of the few BOM plates by Moroni in the NY hill. Or, maybe they just named it AFTER, or in honor of, the real Hill Cumorah. Many cities, streams, mountains, etc. in Utah are named AFTER prominent Bible and BOM names.

Most prominent BOM scholars believe that the BOM Hill Cumorah is located in Central America, not New York. There are a couple of likely candidates for the site that are described by Joseph Allen, who has written extensively about BOM lands, by David Palmer who wrote "In Search of Cumorah", and by several other authors. To me, carefull reading of BOM geography easily eliminates New York State as the location of BOM events, except for Moroni's depositing the gold plates there.
